The Queensland Council of Unions (QCU) is the peak union body in Queensland. It is comprised of 25 affiliated unions, representing 400,000 union members.

Our Mission Statement is “Leading Unions to achieve industrial, political and social justice for Queensland Workers”.

The QCU has an Executive of 45 Officers, 13 of whom form the Management Committee.

Job Purpose & Reporting

The Digital [Campaign] Communications Officer position is to coordinate and execute social media strategy for the QCU state election campaign. The position will report to the Assistant General Secretary and ultimately to the General Secretary of the QCU.

Key Responsibilities

Working with the Assistant General Secretary, and Campaign Coordinator, the Digital Communications Officer is expected to undertake the following duties –

  • Assist with developing online campaign strategies;
  • Develop online content for all major social media platforms including graphics, videos and user-generated content (UGC);
  • Coach and mentor volunteers and activists to share content and create effective UGC; and
  • Provide advice and input on strategic online advertising.

Required Knowledge and Experience

Relevant experience social media management of union and/or political and/or social campaigns and creation of attractive graphics and user generated content.

Skills and Abilities

  • High quality of graphic design.
  • Basic video editing skills.
  • High level communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven capacity to implement projects and meet competing deadlines.
  • Ability to produce high volumes of quality content.
  • Well developed personal organisational and administrative skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative team member.
  • Capacity to self-manage own time and work and to meet competing deadlines.

  • High level ability to work with staff in collaborative projects and to promote a cooperative and cohesive team approach.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the values and principles of trade unionism and ability to work with a diverse range of stakeholders within the trade union movement.

This temporary full time position is based in Brisbane.

Key Selection Criteria

  1. Previous experience providing digital and communications in a political, industrial, social, or workplace campaign.
  2. Experience in working within a union and/or political and/or social campaign environment.
  3. Ability to produce evidence of previous work including graphic design, social media, videos and user-generated content.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with other team members and stakeholders, and to self-manage and work to deadlines, including applying a high level of attention to detail.
  5. Well evidenced ability to demonstrate the values and principles of unionism, and to practice respect and safety for all stakeholders, including with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and other diversity groups within the union movement and community.
