Meet Kylie Muscat, your new HSR Coordinator

As the new statewide Health and Safety Coordinator, I look forward to
meeting and working with workers to ensure they stay safe across our great
state.

I first became actively involved in workplace health and safety during my nearly 10 years as a Correctional Officer at a maximum-security male prison.

I could see the serious and desperate need to improve the health and safety of not only my work colleagues but all workers regardless the industry or profession.

So, in 2014 I started my WHS journey by taking a stand and speaking out about the safety of the people I worked with every day and the urgent need for change.

Understaffing, the excessive workloads and continuous unsafe practices were putting my workmates at risk of injury - both physical and psychosocial - while just trying to earn a living.

In 2014 I was unaware of health and safety reps or that I even had rights as a worker. I just knew this wasn’t ‘just’ or ‘reasonable’ to ‘unreasonably’ place a person in physical or emotional danger.

Everyone deserves the right to be able to go to work every day in the safest workplace practicably possible.

In recent years we are progressing and moving in the right direction on workplace health and safety but there is still a long way to go.

This is a journey, but we are on the right path, and I know together we can achieve safe work practices for all.

‘Safety’ isn’t a slogan, it’s a way of life and Health and Safety Reps do make a
difference.
