Meatworkers taste success with Mareeba meeting

Community action achieved results in Mareeba when the Meatworkers Union (AMIEU) organised a town meeting late last month to call for more locals to be employed at the local factory of national poultry processor Baiada.

Meatworkers union organiser Ian McLauchlan, QCU General Secretary Roslyn McLennan, community reps and more than 200 Mareeba residents attended the meeting, with many completing applications forms for jobs at Baiada.

Instant results (see clipping from local paper The Mareeba Express), with the company stating it will discontinue using labour hire firms and directly employ only locals from now on.

Union representatives are also continuing to meet with the company.

The AMIEU and the QCU will monitor the situation to ensure Baiada sticks to its word.
