New ACTU Secretary McManus off to flying start

Sally McManus was this week elected as new Secretary of the ACTU and immediately pledged to stop the attack on Australian workers through penalty rate cuts.

She is the tenth elected ACTU Secretary in the organisation’s 90-year history and the first woman to hold the prestigious position.

See more about her plans for the movement in this video.

On taking over the role vacated by former Secretary Dave Oliver, she said it was a great privilege to serve the movement and continue her lifelong pursuit of protecting the rights of working people.

“I am extremely proud and excited about the future but there are significant challenges facing working Australians that must be counterattacked,” she said.

“My message today to all Australian workers: Join a union.”

She has already come under attack from the federal Coalition and business lobby with her comments about unjust laws on the ABC 7.30 program widely reported, receiving much support from other union members!

QCU General Secretary Ros McLennan has spent time on campaign travels with the new Secretary and speaks highly of her inclusive approach.

“She is one of the few I’ve ever met that treats union members the same as delegates, the same as organisers, the same as a national secretary,” said McLennan.
