Queensland Unions’ statement on School Strike 4 Climate

The Queensland Council of Unions recognises that many students will be attending the strike for climate change, held nationwide on 15 March.

This generation is reminding us that it will be left to deal with the social, economic and environmental disaster that looms if nothing is done.

In Brisbane the rally starts at 1pm, Friday 15 March at Queen’s Gardens, cnr of Elizabeth and George Streets, in central Brisbane.

Climate leadership takes consensus and commitment, and the federal government has consistently demonstrated it cannot provide either to deal with this crisis.

Unions have been active for many years on how our community can deal with the ever-escalating impacts of human-induced climate change.

The QCU stands with education unions supporting students being able to exercise their democratic right to protest. As the QTU advises, students planning to attend on 15 March should tell their schools beforehand,  and obtain their parents’ permission.

There are some issues so important that we must take action to make our voice heard. It’s an important lesson for future voters!
