Why do unions march on Labour Day? (Brisbane Times)

Why march on Labour Day? What is the point? Why take to the streets with thousands of other Queenslanders and demand to change the rules?

It’s about returning the “fair go” to Australia.

Profits for big business are going up and up but wages have flatlined for the workers whose increasing productivity has contributed to those profits. Profits are funnelled at every opportunity to CEOs, senior executives and the big end of town.

Big business has too much power and they are guided only by the objective of profit maximisation. The rules allow big companies to increase profits through cutting wages and conditions, avoid tax at every opportunity with offshore accounts and loopholes, and move every function they can overseas where workers can be paid $2 per day and exploitation and abuse of workers is commonplace.

Then the CEOs and senior executives score bonuses for slashing costs.
