WIN – Breakthrough for Shalom staff

The Independent Education Union of Australia (QLD and NT Branch) has made a breakthrough in achieving greater assistance for members at the Shalom Christian College secondary school in Townsville, which was closed by the Uniting Church in December.

The Union coordinated community rallies in Brisbane and Townsville – pictured – which highlighted the concerns of staff and students with the unexpected closure of the school.

IEU talks with the Uniting Church over the closure culminated in a formal process in the Fair Work Commission (FWC) earlier this month which has now led to the employer and IEUA working together to implement additional employee support mechanisms.

This positive progress is a giant step forward for these members and helps address the uncertainty faced by these workers over the Christmas period.
