WIN – Indigenous work recognised in annual Awards
The contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to their unions was recognised again this year in a major feature of the union calendar – the Dr Robert (Uncle Bob) Anderson Award.
Union efforts in the progression and development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, particularly among members, workers and communities, in social justice activities, and in employment initiatives was also highlighted with the QCU NAIDOC Union Award.
Attendees heard from guest of honour Uncle Bob Anderson, QCU Assistant General Secretary Michael Clifford and ACTU Indigenous Officer Lara Watson, who all spoke to the group about the continuing efforts of unions of behalf of our First Nations Peoples, particularly around campaigning against the repressive Community Development Program.
Lara also acknowledged principal sponsor Q Super, and other sponsors Slater & Gordon, MGI and Teachers’ Union Health.
Q Super’s Diversity Council Chair Ann Finney also presented the Awards.
Worthy winner of the Bob Anderson Award was United Voice’s Amanda Dewey, a teacher aide from north Queensland, while the work of NTEU member John Graham was highly commended.
United Voice also collected the NAIDOC Union Award for its commitment to developing its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander members, while the Independent Education Union was highly commended.
